Report – Police Scotland – PIRC/00155/26
The Complaints
The complaint in this case arose after police dealt with a death at a property the applicant owned and let out. We have reviewed the handling of single complaint, namely that:
• Police officers gave keys for the applicant’s property to individuals who were not authorised to access the property.
Police Scotland’s Decision
Police Scotland did not uphold the applicant’s complaint.
Our Findings
We have found that Police Scotland did not handle the applicant’s complaint to a reasonable standard.
Consequently, we have made two recommendations to address the shortcomings in Police Scotland’s handling of the complaint. In summary, we have recommended that Police Scotland reassess the available information and provide the applicant with a further response that is well reasoned.
We have also recommended Police Scotland revisit the relevant guidance documents.
Our recommendations should be completed by Police Scotland within two months of the date of this report.
